FLOTNER COLLECTION Inspired by Moresques and Damasquines (Zurich, 1546) Peter Flotner, ca. 1485-1546 Rosenwald Collection, 1948.11.116 The arabesque pattern that adorns this piece is derived from a sixteenth compendium of designs by Peter Flotner. Flotner was a goldsmith and important designer of ornament who was born in Switzerland but worked in Nuremberg, Germany, a great center for the production of decorative metalwork in the early sixteenth century. He is credited with being one of the first artists to introduce Italian Renaissance styles of ornament to northern Europe.
